Josie van Gent Edell was born in Amsterdam and received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Academy of the Hague. She traveled throughout Europe and South Africa in her youth and during World War II worked with the Red Cross transporting patients to inland medical facilities. After the war she worked in advertising and moved to South Carolina in the 1960s. She became known for her watercolor portraits and paintings of Charleston and rural South Carolina architecture.

- toning to painting paper and mat board; inner mat board has slid down and to the left behind front mat, and has a cut to the upper right corner; scuffs and smudge marks to mat board; scratches and edge wear to frame; glazing not present in frame.
