Yugoslavian-born artist George Cermak is known for his paintings of figural scenes, landscapes, and marine scenes, rendered in a post-impressionist style with loose brushstrokes and patches of vibrant colors. He began playing soccer professionally at a young age, but then turned to art when he enrolled at the L’ecole Nationale Superiere des Beaux-Arts in Paris and studied under Fauvist Maurice de Vlaminck. In the 1940s, Cermak left school and served in the International Brigade after escaping from a prisoner camp in 1943. In 1960, he emigrated to the United States and taught at Brescia University and the University of Louisville before moving to Evanston in 1971. In Evanston, he taught students privately and sold his work mostly to private collectors and dealers.
