Arthur Helwig was a notable Cincinnati artist and instructor, with a career that spanned well over four decades. He studied under Bessie Hoover Wessel and James Hopkins at the Cincinnati Art Academy, and later at the Academy Julian and the Académie Moderne, under Fernand Léger (1881 – 1955), in Paris. He returned to the U.S. where he taught at the Art Academy and continued to work in numerous media including watercolor, oils,and printmaking. During his lifetime he exhibited in galleries and museums across the United States and Europe, receiving numerous awards, and served as the president of the Cincinnati Art Club from 1939 to 1941. His work resides in the collections of numerous museums across the United States including: The Cincinnati Art Museum, Chicago Art Institute, The Philadelphia Museum and The Cleveland Art Museum.
