Miguel Martinez Oil Pastel Painting of Mother and Daughter, 1987

Item Details

Untitled (mother and daughter by the sea), 1987
Pastel on paper
Signed to lower right

Martinez was born in Taos, New Mexico, to a family with deep ties to the area near the old Taos Plaza. He is best known for his stunning modernist oil pastel paintings of women rendered in bold colors with large, soulful eyes. He does not use models for these works; these figures emerge from his vivid imagination.

He began his artistic studies as a child at Stables Art Center where he claimed many awards and made jewelry with one of his brothers. Later, he studied local artist Ray Vinella who was his inspiration to pursue his art as a career.

Primarily a painter of women’s portraits, he also works in bronze and ceramics, incorporating the history of the Spanish arriving in New Mexico as motifs for his work.

His work is included in the permanent collections of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum as well as numerous private institutions. He is represented by the prestigious Michael McCormick & Sons Gallery in Taos, New Mexico.
