Native Cincinnatian, John Hauser, studied at the Ohio Mechanic’s Institute and at the Cincinnati Art Association before becoming the pupil of Thomas A. Noble at the McMicken Art School. Additionally he travelled to the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Munich to extend his artistic studies. Hauser then spent years traveling extensively throughout New Mexico and Arizona, eventually earning the admiration and respect of the Native Americans that he painted. In 1901, he was officially adopted into the Sioux nation and given the name ‘Straight White Shield.’
