Wilhelm Riefenstahl, born in 1827, was a German painter who studied at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts. Riefenstahl was known to capture his native surroundings of the Mecklenburg Lake District and the Baltic Sea coast in his paintings with emphasis on the island of Rügen, which he devoted a whole series of paintings to. Riefenstahl eventually became the director of the Karlsruhe Art School.
