Josef Arentz is known for his marine paintings of the New England coastline. While born in Germany, he moved to the United States in 1926 living in Ohio and Florida before settling in Baltimore, Maryland, where he worked in the art department of the U.S. Printing and Lithograph Company and earned an award from the Baltimore Museum of Art for a piece in the Maryland Artists Exhibition. Inspired after a visit to Portland, Arentz moved to Maine drawn by the coasts that would remain the focus of much of his work thereafter. His work is held in many private collections and was featured on the cover of Kenneth Roberts book Boon Island.

- some discoloration to surface of painting; marks to the upper right and center of painting; accretions to painting and throughout frame; marks, chips, and scratches to the finish of the frame.
