Oil painting on canvas

Born from German immigrants, Herbert E. Abrams studied at the Norwich Art School in Connecticut during his teen years. He served in World War II in various capacities, then later worked as a Camouflage Technician. It was during this time that he redesigned the official U.S. Air Force insignia, then worked as an instructor teaching art to commissioned officers at West Point. After leaving the military, he continued his studies at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and the Art Students League under Frank Vincent DuMond. After moving to Connecticut, he focused on painting scenes of New England and still lifes. Later in life, Abrams turned to portraiture and was commissioned to paint portraits of several leading political figures, many of which have been exhibited in the White House and presidential libraries. Some of his notable portrait commissions include Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Barbara Bush, Jimmy Carter, Arthur Miller, and General Westmoreland, to name a few. In honor of his teacher, he also authored the book The Teachings of Frank Vincent DuMond.
