Rayen was best known for his printmaking and pastel landscapes,. He received awards from the Italian government, the Ford Foundation and the Massachusetts Artists Foundation. After graduating from Yale University, Rayen was recruited to teach at Wellesley College, holding the post of Elizabeth Christy Kopf Professor of Art for over forty years. His works can be found in the collections at Andover and Wellesley Davis Museum and the Cincinnati Art Museum.
