Augustus Spencer was a British artist best known for his landscape oil paintings and for his work as an art teacher and headmaster of several prominent art schools in the United Kingdom. Spencer attended the Keighley School of Art and the Government School of Design (later renamed the Royal College of Art). Not long after graduating from the School of Design, Augustus Spencer was appointed Headmaster of the Coalbrookdale School of Art. He went on to work as Headmaster of Leicester School of Art in 1888, and then served as Principal of the Royal College of Art from 1900 to 1920. Spencer was a notable proponent of John Ruskin’s theories regarding art and intrinsic beauty.
