Xavier Barile was born in Italy, and immigrated to New York in 1907. After learning English he studied at Evening Art Classes at Cooper Union Institute in New York and eventually enrolled in the Art Students League, New York City where he studied under John Sloan, Reginald Marsh and Victor Perard. He was part of the informal Ashcan School, a group that painted scenes from daily life in New York’s poorer neighborhoods. He exhibited across the United States, at venues including the Whitney Studio Club, The Kit Kat Club, The Cincinnati Museum, The New Mexico Museum and his work is held in The National Collection of Fine Arts (NCFA) Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.

Condition

- yellowing to painting varnish; accretion to underside of glass; canvas board is shorter than sight edge of frame, and sits with gaps to upper and lower edges; heavy wear to frame, with cracks and flaking finish loss throughout.
