Glenn Stuart Pearce was a WPA artist especially known for his watercolors and pastels featuring industrial scenes in and around Philadelphia. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Daniel Garber and Joseph Pearson, but also studied privately under Arthur Carles. Beginning in the late 1940s, he turned to an abstract expressionist style, painting works that featured cosmic and astrological themes. However, in the 1960s, he returned to a post-impressionistic and fauvist style, painting Philadelphia subjects rendered with a vibrant palette, expressive brushstrokes, and thick dabs of color. Pearce’s work has been exhibited and collected by multiple institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy, and the Woodmere Art Museum, among others.
