Black Barbie was the first doll of color made by Mattel to be called by the Barbie name, not just as a friend of Barbie. She was designed by Louvenia ‘Kitty’ Black Perkins (American, b. 1948), a fashion designer and Chief Designer of Fashions and Doll Concepts for Mattel for twenty-five years.
