Known for his landscapes that exhibit luminous tonalities, Henry Golden Dearth was a French artist who first studied under Horace Johnson. He continued his studies at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris and in the atelier of Aime Morot. He often painted on the coast of Normany, but as a collector of Oriental and Near Eastern art, Dearth sometimes incorporated objects from his collection into his paintings. He opened a studio in New York City in 1887, and often painted on Long Island in East Hampton. During his career, he was a member of several artist associations, including the Society of American Artists and the National Academy of Design, among others.
