Douglass Ewell Parshall was born in New York City in 1899. He began his art training as a young child, working with his father, and by the age of fifteen had exhibited at the National Academy of Design. He went on to study at the Art Students League in New York, Académie Julian in Paris, the Boston Museum School, and under Frank Fletcher. He moved West to Santa Barbara, California in 1917 and subsequently traveled extensively with his family, painting a wide array of subject matter in a variety of media. He was a member of many prestigious organizations, including the National Academy of Design, Society of Western Artists, California Art Club, Santa Barbara Art Association and the California Watercolor Society for which he served as president from 1947-1948. His works are held in the permanent collections of the National Museum of American Art; Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C; M. H. de Young Museum, San Francisco; Santa Barbara Museum and more.
