Celebrated French photographer Lucien Clergue was known for his modernist black and white photographs often featuring female nudes, harlequins, bull fights, and dead animals. Some of his friends and advocates include Pablo Picasso, whom he photographed, renowned photographer Edward Steichen, poet and playwrighter Jean Cocteau, and renowned French literary critic and theorist Roland Barthes. In 2006, he was the first photographer elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts, and in 2013 he was appointed Chairman of the Academy of Fine Arts, Paris, among other major life accomplishments. Aside from being widely published, his work has been exhibited and collected by numerous prestigious institutions including the Museum of Modern Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Fogg Museum; and the International Center of Photography, to name a few.
