Paul Jones was a noted turn-of-the-century Cincinnati artist known for his portraiture. Born in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, Jones studied in Paris at the Académie Julian and Académie Colarossi schools under Jean-Paul Laurens, François Flameng, and Gustave Courtois. Upon returning to Cincinnati, he began work at the Strobridge Lithographing Company and then later at Pike’s Opera House under in-house artist Matt Morgan. Paul Jones was a member of the Duveneck Society and served a term as president of the the Cincinnati Art Club.

- overpainting throughout particularly to face, hair, chair, and background; drying cracks to hair and chair; blooming and blistering to varnish and pigment of chair back and to some areas of hair; varnish irregularly applied including dripline of varnish visible between background and subject notably to the shoulder to the right; cracks and some craquelure throughout; scratches to the corners including signature; painting examined under black light; dent to the canvas at stretcher to the upper right; slight warping to canvas to upper right corner; canvas relined with edge visible to the lower right corner; cracks and minor chips throughout molding of frame; marks, finish loss, and abrasions throughout frame; tears to backing paper remnants to the verso.
