Nearly 40 years ago, French jeweler Jean Vitau arrived in New York City with a small stash consisting of three rings that were fashioned with an innovative bar-style setting that he had invented and patented (the Gemlok setting). Vitau went on to be a major supplier to Tiffany & Co. where his designs were the top selling wedding bands for many years. Vitau also created very sophisticated jewelry in platinum and 18K gold with gemstones for the Jean Vitau Collection. His motif was often delicate animals, birds and flowers inspired by nature. Jean Vitau was highly regarded in the trade, his 2011 obituary read ‘He was a visionary, one of the first to brand jewelry……forging the way for all the designers that we have today’.
