A karalama is a Turkish or Persian calligraphy study or exercise on a single sheet of paper. They are often composed of arbitrary sentences using different sized script and arranged seemingly at random sometimes with overlapping text. These studies are used by calligraphy students and masters to maintain abilities and to develop new techniques and perspectives.

- toning and discoloration to paper; smudging to ink particularly to the upper right; tears to the edges of the sheet; scratches and finish loss to the frame.
