Known for his vibrant expressionistic work, Italo George Botti painted under the pseudonym George Barrel, however some of his signatures read ‘Barrel-Botti’ and ‘Italo Botti’. Born in Greenwich Village, he earned a scholarship to the Leonardo da Vinci School of Art, and continued his studies at the Brooklyn Academy of Fine Arts, the Abracheff School of Fine Art, and the Art Student’s League, where he was taught by Nicolai Abracheff, Frank Vincent Dumond, Reginald Marsh and Bernard Lamott. Barrel was a painter, muralist, sculptor, and stained glass artist, but also designed and restored religious work for hundreds of churches, museums, hospitals, and governemental buildings. He also established studios in Evanston, San Diego, and Sarasota called the Botti Studio of Architectural Arts Inc., each of which employed dozens of artists.
