Handmade Electrified Dollhouse with Accessories

Vera Rittenhouse, who crafted this dollhouse and others in this sale, was born in 1920, growing up during the Great Depression and living through World War II during her early married years. Although her family could not afford to send her to college, she was an avid reader and taught herself many subjects. She was always interested in history, art, fashion, interior design, and architecture, interests that eventually led her to begin creating dollhouses. She and her husband built the first of these in the late 1980s for one of their granddaughters. Vera enjoyed it so much that she just kept going, eventually creating over two dozen dollhouses and another two dozen room boxes. Her dollhouses range from a casual Cape Cod cottage to an elegant, three-story French Chateau. They included institutions such as a white-steeple church and a one-room schoolhouse, similar to the one Vera attended for several years when she was a child. Some of the dollhouses she made were from kits but a number of them were original designs often modeled after a picture that caught her eye in a magazine. All were decorated, furnished, illuminated and lived-in by doll families with individual names and occupations.
