Son of former Oaklan mayor Clifford Rishell, Robert Rishell was a member of the Society of Western Artists and organized their first exhibition at the California Garden and Home Exposition in 1949. Rishell received his B.A. and M.A. at the California College of Arts and Crafts and later acquired his teaching credentials at the University of California, Berkeley. He also studied under Xavier Martinez, a student of John Singer Sargent. Rishell was an instrumental component in starting the Oakland Museum, where he was an active participant until his death. One of his significant projects includes a commission by the state of California to paint the official gubernatorial portrait of Ronald Reagan, who was the governor at the time. His work has been collected and exhibited by numerous institutions including the California State Capitol Museum, the Oakland Museum, the de Young Museum, the Palm Springs Desert Museum, the Indianapolis Museum, West Point Museum, and the Naval Academy Museum, among others. Some of his private collectors are Ronald Reagan and Barry Goldwater, to name a few.
