William Lister Lister was known for his rural idyllic landscapes and seascapes influenced by the Barbizon School. He was born in Australia then moved to Yorkshire, England with his parents at age eight. In Glasglow, Scotland, he studied mechanical engineering at the College of Sciece and Arts and at Fairfield Engineering Works. A well accomplished artist, Lister began exhibiting his art at the Royal Scottish Academy at age seventeen. After returning to Sydney in 1888, he began painting seascapes and coastal scenes, and won the Australian Wynne Prize seven times throughout his lifetime. He was eventually appointed a trustee of the National Art Gallery of New South Wales, where he also served as Vice President from 1919 to 1943. Before his untimely death due to a taxi accident, Lister exhibited his work at multiple institutions including the National Art Gallery of NSW, the Grafton Galleries in London, and Anthony Horderns’ Fine Art Gallery in Australia.
