Pair of Federal Paint Decorated Games Tables, Boston, circa 1815

Item Details

These attractive games tables are of a form produced in Boston during the first quarter of the 19th century. Examples of Boston furniture that retain original their paint decoration are exceedingly rare. These tables are among a handful of known extant pieces. Their importance is made more significant by the presence of a pair. The serpentine shaped tops are veneered with birds-eye maple above aprons and legs, which retain vivid red paint. The apron and legs are line decorated and gilt. The central frieze on the apron features a cornucopia with foliate decorations. The underside has an even oxidized surface with scattered abrasions and no evidence of previous repairs.

Condition

- each table has a dry old surface with scattered paint loss throughout; top surfaces have stains and scratches; one top has a 10" shrinkage crack on the left side of the upper fly leaf and a flaked veneer sliver at the back right; the interior of this same table has a corresponding shrinkage crack through the fly leaf and an almost full length crack in the bottom leaf; large circular water stain; the other table has a lifting veneer on the right side and a corresponding crack; the corners of the apron have old repaired breaks; the legs are no longer straight and show typical imperfections and warping; both tables with nicks, scratches, and abrasions consistent with age and use.
