Born in east Baltimore, Louis J. Feuchter was best known as a maritime artist, however his earlier work was influenced by the Impressionists. At age 12, he won a scholarship to the Maryland Institute of Art, and worked as a silver designer for Kirk and Sons early in his career. He later was employed as a sculptor, but was laid off during the Depression. Feuchter spent his summers on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, where he became deeply interested in the Bay’s byways, landscapes, and boats, which he began capturing in his paintings with meticulous detail. In 1929, Eastern Shore boatbuilder George Jackson constructed a sailing yacht for Feuchter, which the artist used to sail toward the Patapsco River to find rural settings for his paintings, many of which feature his own yacht. Feuchter was commissioned by Mariner Museum curator Robert Burgess to paint a series of ship portraits, proving his ability to capture precise details of various vessels, ranging from bugeyes to crabbing skiffs. His work is housed in the collection of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and other nearby galleries.
