Martha Sturdy is a Canadian sculptor, painter, and designer who received her BFA at Emily Carr University, where she also received an Honorary Doctor of Letters in 2006. Her work takes inspiration from Conceptual Art and Suprematist Art, utilizing pure forms and resolved, balanced formalism in her abstract work, that spans from installations, standing steel, salvaged wood, and wearable sculpture. Sturdy’s work has been collected internationally and has been featured in reputable magazines, such as Italian and French Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, American, Espana, and Architectural Digest. In 2002, she was the recipient of a Golden Jubilee Award from the Governor General, and was inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA) in 2005. Some of her major commissions including permanent installations in Vancouver Olympic Village and downtown Tokyo, Japan. Currently, Sturdy is represented by Orie Gallery located in Tokyo. Her work has been exhibited in galleries throughout Canada, Tokyo, and Korea.
