James Coignard was a French painter, sculptor, and engraver who first studied art at the Ecole des Arts Dècoratifs in Nice, and later apprenticed under the artist Marchand des Raux. Coignard was known for his expressionist style until the 1960s, then he turned toward a more abstract style that combined shapes, typographical characters, and floating motifs against mixed media backgrounds. As a sculptor, he experimented with bronze and glass, creating his first glass sculpture in the 1970s. A well-traveled individual, Coignard’s work has been exhibited and collected by numerous institutions including the the British Museum, the Bibliotheque Nationale (Paris), Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York), the Museum of New Mexico, the Phoenix Art Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the High Museum (Atlanta), among many others.
