Jean-Marie Toulgouat was widely renowned for being the last living link to historically famed Impressionist painter Claude Monet at Giverny, the Normandy village where Monet lived and painted his water lilies series, but was also an established artist in his own right. He was the grandson of Monet’s stepdaughter Suzanne Hoschede and was taught to paint by Blanche Hoschede Monet, who had been Claude Monet’s only pupil. Toulgouat also studied architecture in Nice, France, and worked as a landscape artist in Paris, designing municipal parks and gardens. During the 1960s, he decided to return to his home and painterly roots in Giverny to focus on painting, producing whimsical, colorful and abstracted landscapes, gardens and trees.
