1866 First Edition Second Issue "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" by L. Carroll

Item Details

A first edition, second issue of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll with forty-two illustrations by John Tenniel. This volume, know as the ‘Appleton Alice’ uses the pages originally printed in London in the original print run. A new title page was issued with D. Appleton listed as the publisher and dated 1866. John Tenniel did not approve of the early runs of his illustrations. Subsequently, those initial unbound issues were sold with a new title page to become what is known as an ‘Appleton Alice’ edition. As such, this is technically the first edition, second issue, though often also referred to as the first American edition.

The half leather book has been rebound with the original gilt vignette affixed to the interior board. First edition points include the ‘B’ in ‘By’ slightly to the left of the ‘C’ in Carroll and directly above the ‘T’ in Tenniel on the title page.
