Brother of notable artist William Lamb Picknell, George Picknell was known for his paintings of Connecticut and rural France. He studied at the Académie Julian in Paris under Jules Lefebvre and Benjamin Constant. After returning to the United States, he worked in Boston and New York as an illustrator, then returned to France for 15 years, exhibiting his work at the Paris Salon and participated in exhibitions in Nice and Toulouse. Picknell was a founding memeber of the American Artists Association in Paris and the Silvermine Guild of Artists. During his lifetime, he exhibited at numerous institutions including the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, The Society of Independent Artists, and the John Herron Institute (now the Indianapolis Museum of Art), among others.
Condition
- overpainting along right edge; painting examined under black light; slight warping to canvas; chipping along lower edge of frame; nicks and abrasions to the frame; paperboard pulled back to examine canvas along upper edge to the verso.
