Gen Yamaguchi Woodblock "Encounter"

Japanese artist Gen Yamaguchi was known for his woodblocks often featuring figural and abstract subjects. Born in the Shizuoka prefecture, he was a student of celebrated mentor of the Sosaku Hanga movement, Koshiro Onchi. Yamaguchi’s became a member of the Ichimokushu, the ‘First Thursday Society’, which was a group of Sosaku Hanga artists who met at Onchi’s house every first Thursday of the month. Yamaguchi’s work has been exhibited and collected by multiple institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others.
