René Carcan was born in Belgian and studied under Léon Devos, Jacques Maes and Johnny Friedlaender. He attended the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts and St Josse ten Noode, and some of his artistic influences include Henri Matisse, Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. During his lifetime, he exhibited throughout Europe and Africa. After his death, his former studio in Brussels was converted into a museum called the Fondation René Carcan, which preserves his work and holds exhibitions featuring internationally renowned artists.
