Although he worked in a variety of media, Sidney Simon was predominantly known for his sculptures and assemblages. The artist was born in Pittsburgh and studied at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Grande Chaumiere in Paris. Due to his fascination with motion, he pursued sculpture, working mostly in clay, terra cotta, and bronze. He was a founder of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, and his work has been exhibited and collected by numerous institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Corcoran Art Gallery, and the Williams College Museum of Art, among others. Among his notable public commissions are the fountains sculptures at World Wide Plaza in Manhattan and at the Graham Building in Philadelphia, and the altar screen and sculptures in the chapel located at the United States Military Academy at West Point.
