Iwao Akiyama was born in Takeda, Ōita Prefecture, on the island of Kyushu in 1921. He studied under Shikō Munakata and Teijiro Fuse at the Pacific Art Institute. Known for his distinct owl woodblocks, Akiyama belonged to the Fine Artist Association of Japan, the Pacific Art Club, and the Woodblock group “Saku.” Today, his works can be found in private collections around the world and in institutions such as the National Museum of England, National Art Museum in Victoria, and the Museum of Japanese Art in Haifa, Israel.
