Landscape painter Henry Ward Ranger was born in Syracuse, New York and attended Syracuse University, however he was mostly self-taught as an artist. Known for his Tonalist landscape paintings, he was influenced by the Barbizon School, especially the works of Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, Jean-François Millet, Theodore Rousseau, and Adolphe Monticelli. The artist spent time copying paintings of Old Masters at the Louvre and studied in the Hague School Masters in the Netherlands. After returning to the United States, he focused on painting the New England landscape in the Barbizon manner, and became one of the founding members of the famous Barbizon art colony in Old Lyme Connecticut, centered around the Florence Griswold house. His work often featured wooded forested areas illuminated with subtle light filtering through the trees. However, at times he used brighter colors in works that exhibit the influence of Impressionism. By 1906, he was recognized as the leader of the late Tonalist movement in the United States. His work has been exhibited at numerous institutions including the Corcoran Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Brooklyn Art Association, the National Academy of Design, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, among others.
