A 1928 oil painting on canvas by listed artist Jean Janin (France, 1899 – 1970). This allegorical painting features images from the Roman myth of Callisto, the nymph who was turned into a bear by Jupiter’s jealous wife Juno and eventually thrown to the heavens where she formed the constellation Ursa Major. She is seen shackled amongst celestial bodies, including the planet Jupiter to the upper right. Rendered in a muted palette of gray, greens and blues, this painting borrows stylized motifs from the art déco style that was prevalent in the late 1920s. This work is signed and dated to the lower right and is housed in a gilt wood frame with pale green accents and is equipped to hang.
