Theodoros Stamos Serigraph for "The Paris Review", 1964-65 New York World's Fair
Item Details
Greek-American artist Theodoros Stamos was the youngest of the first-generation Abstract Expressionists, alongside Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Ad Reinhardt, and Clyfford Still. Stamos is known for his large-scale gestural abstract compositions, inspired by East Asian aesthetics and philosophies. His early work often features biomorphic abstractions and muted palettes to evoke the texture and appearance of earth elements, such as rocks, sand, terrain, and water. His work has been exhibited and collected by numerous institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Smithsonian American Art Museu, the Corcoran Gallery, and the Phillips Collection, among many others.
