James J. McAuliffe was known for his paintings of nautical subjects, equestrian portraits, religious and rural scenes, portrayed in a traditional realistic manner. Many of his works have been sold at auction and several are housed in the Cathedral at St. John’s, Newfoundland.
Condition
- restoration work to the signature to the lower right; overpainting to the center; painting examined under blacklight; craquelure throughout; slight discoloration and uneven application to varnish; cracks and nicks throughout frame; repairwork to molding of frame particularly to the corners; marks and abrasions to the frame.

- measures frame; sight measures 15.75" W x 11.75" H.
