Romanian-born American artist De Hirsh Margules was an ‘abstract realist’ who immigrated to the United States with his family when he was ten months old. He studied in Pittsburgh with Edwin Randby, a follower of Frederic Remington, then studied architecture, design and decoration at the New York Evening School of Art and Design. Margules surrounded himself with major artists and intellectuals of his time, such as Stuart Davis, Buckminster Fuller, and Alfred Stieglitz, with whom he shared a twelve-year correspondence. Stieglitz introduced Margules to John Marin, who would become a major artistic influence on Margules. His work has been collected and exhibited by numerous reputable institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Museum of Modern Art; the Brooklyn Museum of Art; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; among others.
