Based in Cumbria, England, John McKie works with a variety of media including collage, acrylic paint, oil crayons, pens, cardboard, paper, and wood. Taking inspiration from the media, he often finds preexisting magazine ads and imagery, and defaces them with witty slogans and figures rendered in an Art Brut style. McKie describes his work as very process-oriented, allowing his drawings to evolve as he works without pre-meditated direction. He has exhibited his work in various galleries throughout Scotland, Germany, England, and the United States.
