Son of Italian immigrants, Joseph Anthony was known for a variety of work including paintings, drawings, ceramics, and gained critical acclaim for his experimental work in enamel. He studied at several institutions such as the Art Students League in New York, the University of Southern California, Columbia University, the École des Beaux-Arts, and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. Buzzelli’s early work reflects the influence of Social Realism, often featuring laborers, the urban poor, and other scenes of daily life. However, after traveling to France, he turned to his more celebratory urban scenes, employing a brighter color palette and more abstract style. He was eventually recognized as a ‘pioneer in the enamels field’, and his work was featured in the 1948 Ceramic National in Syracuse, the 1959 exhibition Enamels at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts, and the Imperial Exhibition 1961, among many other shows.
