For several years after the passing of George Washington the nation was still in mourning. This important memento mori depicts a man and woman weeping at an obelisk monument to the dearly departed first president, with an allegorical figure representing an anchor of hope in an uncertain future.
It was drawn and printed by Thomas Clarke of Boston, who was active in New England beginning around 1797, and dates circa 1801.
