British stumpwork embroidery from the second half of the 17th century, stitched on linen canvas in silk, wool, and metal bullion threads using a variety of flat and raised stitching techniques including tent stitch, needle weaving, and drawn-thread eyelets. The imagery depicts a common theme of the time with central man and woman styled at King Charles II and his wife Catherine of Braganza, surrounded by a field of flowers, trees, animals, and insects with a castle in the distance.
Condition
- staining and discoloration to thread and ground with uneven fading to colored threads; heavy wear to embroidery with loss of stitching throughout, as well as broken and loose threads; areas of loss and holes to ground indicative of insect damage, in addition to normal aging wear; faint marks and scratches to glass; nicks, scratches and abrasions to frame; chips and nicks around frame; especially to edges and corners.
