Hoerman studied at the Ox Bow School in Saugatuck, MI under Frederick Fursman and Albert Krehbiel after the encouragement of her husband, landscape painter Carl Hoerman. In the 1920s, she began to exhibit alongside her husband in local shows and galleries, including the Chalet Art Gallery. During the winter months, they spent time travelling and painting in the southwest and at their homes in southern California.
