A monumental oil painting on canvas titled Falls of Clyde by artist Richard Whately West (United Kingdom, 1848 – 1905). Portrayed with meticulous detail, this work features cascading creek waterfalls cutting through an autumnal forest area, subtly illuminated by the radiating sunlight. The work is signed ‘R.W. West’ to the lower left and presented in a gold-tone gesso and wood frame. It is also signed and titled to the canvas verso.

Grandson of Charles Dickens, Richard Whately West was landscape painter who had no formal art training, but regularly exhibited his work at the London Royal Academy, the Society of British Artists, and the New Watercolour Society (now the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours). In addition, his work has been exhibited and collected by the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Royal Hibernian Academy, among other institutions. Two years after his untimely death, the Alassio Gallery was established as a memorial to the artist, currently housing several of his works.

- cleaning test area with square of varnish removal to the upper center; minor areas of overpainting to the upper left and right corners; cracks throughout particularly to the lower center; painting examined under black light; cracks and chips throughout frame; loss of molding to the upper center of the frame; accretions and dust throughout; finish loss, marks, and scratches to the frame.
