An early 20th century oil painting on canvas of a mountainous landscpae by father and son artists John Henry ‘Hy’ Hintermeister (Swiss-born American; 1869 -1945) and Henry ‘Hy’ Hintermeister (American; 1897 – 1970). With the sun radiating a mystical glow throughout the entire scene, this work features Native American nude figure raising arms toward a plane in the sky, surrounded by a picturesque mountainous landscape. The work is signed Hintermeister / Hy to the lower left and presented in a gold-tone gesso and wood frame.

Under the pseudonym ‘Hy’, John Henry and Henry Hintermeister were father and son artists who often collaborated on their illustration work. As a very prolific team often compared to Norman Rockwell, they produced over 1,000 illustrations. Many of these feature humorous American genre scenes and American history scenes for calendars, which were reproduced as prints and jigsaw puzzles. Some of the calendar art companies that featured their work include Brown and Bigelow, The Osborne Co., Louis F. Kemper Thomas and American Art Works, among others.

Condition

- discoloration to varnish; overpainting, wear, and discoloration to the lower left obscures signatures, they are better visible with UV and directional light; other areas of overpainting restoration present throughout; scratches and wear to frame; tape to verso backing.
