Attributed to Shiotsuki Juran Japanese Hanakago Sculpture
Item Details
A Japanese abstract hanakago (flower basket) sculpture attributed to noted artist Shiotsuki Juran (Japanese, 1948 – 2016). The work is thought to be from the artist’s Flowing Lines Baskets (Ryūsen hanakago) series and consists of flowing and interwoven curvilinear lines in a cocoon-like form composed of bamboo and darker stained rattan. Some of the knotting techniques utilized are cross knots (juji-musubi), insect wrapping (mushi-maki), simple wrapping (bo-maki), and a foot ring to the underside. The piece is inscribed and dated ‘九三(93)’ to the underside.
Shiotsuki Juran was an influential contemporary artist known for his abstractions of the more traditional styles and shapes of hanakago. From Beppu, Kyūshū, he was apprenticed to Ichihara Kaunsai and studied at the Beppu higher school of industrial training in Oita. His work was recently featured in the Japanese Bamboo Art: The Abbey Collection exhibition at the The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
