Best known for his landscape paintings featuring Jamaican life, Huie is thought to be the “Father of Jamaican Painting.” Huie’s early studies include tutelage under Armenian artist Koren der Harootian and Jamaican painter Dorothy Henriques-Wells. He also studied at The Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts in London, England and the Ontario College of Art. Awards include the 1939 New York World’s Fair, the 1953 Spanish Biannual in Havana, Cuba, and the Institute of Jamaica 1976 Gold Musgrave Medal.
