An oil painting on canvas titled Liasion by listed Surrealist artist Jean Calogero (United States/Italy, 1922 – 2001). This painting depicts two women, both wearing elaborate floral headdresses, seated at a cafe table as a third masked figure approaches with a tray of fruit. This work is signed to the lower left, and the artist and title are inscribed to the verso. It is presented in a silver tone wood frame and is equipped to hang.
Jean Calogero is best known for his dreamlike Surrealist paintings and genre works. He was born and raised in Sicily, where he showed an interest in art at an early age. After attending the Liceo Artistico in the city of Etna, he left for France where he studied painting at the Ecole Des Beaux-Arts. He settled in Paris, working with Galerie Hervè and exhibited extensively throughout the 1950s in Paris, followed by shows in New York and Los Angeles, and eventually in Japan and Italy. He was awarded the Great Silver Medal in Paris in 1957.
