An oil painting on canvas by listed Surrealist artist Jean Calogero (United States/Italy, 1922 – 2001). This painting depicts a harlequin figure, with a painted face and elaborate floral headdress, carrying a mandolin over their shoulder as they gaze directly at the viewer. This work is signed to the lower right. It is housed in an off-white wood frame and is equipped to hang.

Jean Calogero is best known for his dreamlike Surrealist paintings and genre works. He was born and raised in Sicily, where he showed an interest in art at an early age. After attending the Liceo Artistico in the city of Etna, he left for France where he studied painting at the Ecole Des Beaux-Arts. He settled in Paris, working with Galerie Hervè and exhibited extensively throughout the 1950s in Paris, followed by shows in New York and Los Angeles, and eventually in Japan and Italy. He was awarded the Great Silver Medal in Paris in 1957.

- scattered small areas of craquelure; slight buckle to canvas to lower left corner; stains to frame liner; light wear to frame finish.
